Frequently Asked Questions
Additional Information
- Q. I'm interested in one of your dogs, what is my first step in the adoption process?
- A> Your first step to adopting any dog with NMLB is to fill out a general application. Once that is completed, we will be able to discuss the details of adopting a dog with you. *Please proofread your application before submitting and if possible, do not fill it out on your phone. Missing information and typos hold up your application being processed quickly. *All of our dogs are in foster homes so in order to ensure your commitment to adopt now and to schedule with foster parents, you must be approved before we schedule a meet and greet.
- Q. Do I need to fill out an applicatio for every dog I'm interested in?
- A> No. You only need to fill out one application at the start. It is a general application that lets us know about you and your individual adopting situation. Please do let us know if your adopting situation changes though.
- Q. What are your adoption fees?
- A.> The adoption donation fee for most dogs is $425, unless otherwise noted in their Pet Adoption File. This is a non-negotiable fee and it covers the following items: Pull fees, boarding/quarantine fees, age appropriate vaccinations (including rabies, bordetella, distemper), microchipping, spay/neuter for dogs over 4 months, deworming, heartworm screening 6 months and older, heartworm treatment if needed, heartworm and flea prevention, and any other incurred costs.
- Q. Do you have any special programs for seniors?
- A> Yes! We have a Senior Program available through our rescue. We offer a discounted $100 adoption fee for qualifying seniors who are adopting a senior dog over 9 years of age. Eligible dogs will have a special notation on their profile page.
- Q. Is the dog I'm interested in still available?
- A> We do our best to keep the website as up to date as possible. Check the dog's adoption status under the Adoptable dogs tab for the most current information.
- Q. I found a dog and I'm in love, I just HAVE to have him! If I am the first to apply, do I get the dog?
- A> We do not offer dogs on a first-come, first-serve basis. Our main goal is to meet the needs of the dog. Placing the dog in a home that we feel would be the best fit is our first priority.
- Q. Is the dog I'm interested in housebroken, good with children, cats, or other dogs?
- A> All this information is included in the individual pet summary. We try and share with you as much information as we have on our adoptable dogs tab.. We add any newly found information into the summaries as it becomes available to us. We can also help answer any questions you may have during your personal pet visit.
- Q. Can I come visit the dog I am interested in adopting?
- A> Once you have filled out the general adoption application online and are approved, we will set up a time for you to come meet any dog you are potentially interested in and talk about your own personal adopting situation. A good fit between dog and owner benefits everyone.
- Q. The adoption isn't working out, can I return the dog to you?
- A> Not only can you...but you MUST return the dog to us. This is part of the agreement you sign when adopting a dog. If for any reason you can't keep the dog, it must be returned to our rescue per your adoption contract. Your adoption fee donation is non-refundable per your adoption contract. This donation goes towards rescuing and vetting the next homeless dog we take in.
- Q. I can't adopt at this time but would still like to help, what are my options?
- A> I'm so very glad you asked! Our Ways to Help page will give you several ways to help other than adopting. We greatly appreciate any help we receive. We couldn't do this without you.
